In celebrating my father’s life. His journey began in 1938 in Sydney, Australia, and he was the first born for John (Jack) Williams and Hilda Brooks.

I would not be the woman I am today without his guidance and love. His support and encouragement were the foundation of my growth and confidence. He showed me the importance of pursuing one’s passions with dedication and living life fully. The lessons he imparted through our shared experiences in diving and surfing remain deeply ingrained in my heart.

As I reflect on my father’s life, I am filled with gratitude for the countless ways he shaped who I am. He will always hold a key place in my heart, not just as a remarkable athlete and adventurer, but as a loving father whose impact transcends his many achievements. His legacy lives on in the values he instilled, the memories we shared, and the love that continues to guide us.

My father grew up in an era that demanded both strength and adaptability. His childhood was not a happy upbringing which my father never talked about to anyone except my mother. Despite the challenges, he embraced life with a spirit of determination and optimism.
From a young age, my father exhibited a natural curiosity and a passion for the sea. Whether it was fishing, swimming or surfing, he approached each endeavor with a blend of enthusiasm and diligence.
One of the most enduring lessons from his early life was the value of hard work. My father was a quietly spoken man who has a passion for hard work, surf lifesaving and immediate family. His stories always resonated with me, revealing the strength of his character and the depth of his compassion.
Looking back, it’s clear that the values and experiences of my father’s early years were instrumental in shaping the incredible person he became. His legacy is not only in the stories he shared but also in the way he lived his life—an embodiment of the lessons learned from his youth.

In 1961, a new chapter began not only for my father but for our entire family. He married Janice Nelson, and together they embarked on a journey that would bring us countless cherished memories. Their union was a testament to their relationship, love and shared values. Their life together was built on the solid foundation of hard work and creating memories.
That same year, I was born, and with my arrival, our family took on new dimensions. My father embraced his role as a parent with the same dedication and love that defined his earlier years.
My father’s early experiences, combined with the love and commitment he and Mum shared, shaped the environment in which I grew up.

Surf Life Saving

His career in surf boat rowing in an unexpected way, and it quickly became a defining element of his life. Over more than 40 years, my father not only competed but excelled, earning the respect and admiration of his peers and establishing himself as a true champion. As both a rower and a sweep, he led his teams to numerous victories and championships, embodying the spirit of perseverance and teamwork.
The surf boat, with its rhythmic challenge and the unpredictable power of the ocean, became a central part of his life. He mastered the art of harnessing the elements, guiding his crew with precision and strategy. His leadership and skill on the water were matched only by his dedication to training and his deep love for the sport.
Beyond the championships and accolades, it was the camaraderie and the shared experiences with his teammates that he cherished most. The stories of practices, fierce competitions, and the triumphs and trials of the sport were a source of pride and joy for him. His commitment to the surf boat community was unwavering, and he took great pride in mentoring younger rowers and sharing his knowledge.

Later Life

One of the most cherished chapters of his life was the time mum and dad, spent traveling throughout Australia. With a motorhome as his home on wheels, they explored the vast and diverse landscapes of our great country. From the sun-drenched beaches to the rugged outback, they embraced every corner of Australia with enthusiasm and wonder. These journeys were not just about the destinations but about the experiences along the way.
Fishing became more than just a hobby for them it was a passion that intertwined with their travels. Whether casting a line into a tranquil river or trying their luck off a remote coast, fishing provided them with moments of serenity and joy. Each trip was marked by tales of the ones that got away, the breathtaking scenery, and the camaraderie shared with friends and family.
The motorhome adventures were a time of exploration and discovery. My father loved sharing stories of the people he met, the unique places he visited, and the breathtaking beauty of the Australian landscape. These experiences enriched his life and created lasting memories that he often recounted with a sparkle in his eye.
